Coach Rick Walker had led the Sarasota Sharks Masters swim club for 20 years when he was honored as the USMS Coach of the Year. Known for welcoming swimmers of all backgrounds, abilities, and ages, he coached Paralympians and Special Olympic athletes in addition to all levels of Masters swimmers. Rick helped new swimmers realize their full potential, inspiring many to take their first strokes. An accomplished competitive swimmer himself, he set a great example for training and demonstrated a lifestyle that embodied discipline, dedication, and determination.

Rick supported numerous fundraisers that benefited the Sharks’ facilities, all while growing his club from a handful of members to over 300. A great communicator, he fostered a healthy communication with his swimmers and fellow coaches. He was known for his ability to convey complex techniques and strategies in a relatable manner, which made practices more fun. Confidence and unity within the team thrived. Members benefitted from articles and videos that he wrote or helped produce. He was co-meet director for local, national, and international competitions held at the Sharks’ home pool.

Rick’s way of motivating his swimmers was an endearing quality. He didn’t push, he nudged. He didn’t dictate, he hinted. Above all, he never demanded. Everyone in the club was encouraged, and it was this unique approach that not only shaped the exceptional swimmers but also made everyone better in both swimming and volunteering. Under Rick’s coaching leadership, team members had set 155 USMS and world records and the team consistently placed in the top team rankings at national competitions.
