His work to help trans athletes by publicly chronicling his own transition has grown from a local endeavor to a national program in just a few years. His announcement led to the creation of the Lanemate Project, designed to eliminate – or, at the very least, reduce – the inherent stigma that comes with gender in sports. He designed swim caps where athletes could check a box to identify their gender, and organized a swim clinic specifically for transgender and nonbinary athletes. Since then, interest in the Lanemate Project has grown beyond southern California.
