Randy Nutt Serves Swimming in So Many Ways

Randy Nutt received the Dorothy Donnelly Service Award in 2008. He exemplifies what it is to be a volunteer! He never tires when it comes to helping and giving back to Masters swimming. He has served the Florida Gold Coast LMSC as president and Long Distance Chair and he is currently the vice president. On the national level he serves as Vice Chair of the Open Water / Long Distance committee. Randy is well known for his open water events put on by Aqua Moon Adventures. He has directed the “around Key West” swim for 15 years, the St. Croix swim for 10 years and the Bonaire open water race for seven years. While Randy is mainly seen at open water events, he can also be found in the pool scoring points for his team or coaching one of Gold Coast Masters satellite teams, Boca Meadows Masters. Randy Nutt is a behind the scenes helper making Masters swimming better for all of us.

First Ever Solo Swims Around Miami Beach

A pair of South Florida distance swimmers recently attempted and completed what had never been done. Gail Rice and Randy Nutt swam around Miami Beach—21 miles in all (on Sept. 16). Randy, 37 years old, completed the distance in 9:19. Just four weeks earlier both completed the 28.5 mile Manhattan Island swim. Nutt said the Miami swim was tougher than the longer Manhattan swim. "We swallowed a lot of salt water," said Nutt. "The wind was very strong and blowing into our faces the majority of the time."

Randy Helps Scott Cross the English Channel

Randy served with the support crew that accompanied Scott Coleman in his successful swim across the English Channel. The 21 mile swim, from Dover, England to Cap Gris-Nez, France was completed in under ten hours.

Randy Swims Around Manhattan

Randy Nutt, 37, of Coral Springs was second in his age group and seventh overall (with a time of) 7:38 (in the 15th Manhattan Island Marathon Swim). It was Nutt's best open water swim among an elite field. The winning time was 7:16.42. The water temperature was 69 degrees. Randy Nutt Elected Chairman of Florida Gold Coast LMSC

Randy Nutt was elected chairman of the Gold Coast LMSC on May 21 in a special meeting held at Anne McGuire's home in Delray Beach. New by-laws were also adopted at this meeting, which Randy had been working on for the past several weeks with assistance from June Krauser, Carl House, and others. Randy replaces Jorge Gonzalez as chairman, since Jorge has moved to North Carolina in a relocation requested by his employer.

Randy is a native Floridian. He was taught to swim at age eleven by June Woolger when she coached at Pinecrest with Jack Nelson. Randy later went to Nova High School and swam sprint freestyle for Nova. Nova High was Florida State High School Champions all four years that Randy swam with them and Randy made High School All-American. He went on to Marshall University in West Virginia, and returned to Florida after graduation.

Randy is a broker and financial advisor at Payne Webber in Ft. Lauderdale. He swims at Coral Springs, and has been a great help in the development of the program there according to Judy Bonning. Among his many contributions has been obtaining non-profit status for Judy's booster club, the Coral Springs Masters Swim Program, Inc. Randy has also helped organize monthly ocean swims from the beach in front of the Hall of Fame. Ocean and long distance swimming are his preference now, even though he was All-American as a free style sprinter. His proudest moment in swimming, he says, was finishing fourth in the Swim Around Key West last July. His time was five hours and eight minutes for the 12 mile swim. That's a continual pace of 1:27 per 100 yards for five hours in spite of tides, jellyfish, boat wake, waves, and other distractions.

Randy is married to Claudia Nutt, and they have two children. Sarah is five and a half years old, and Ryan is four years old.

His hopes as Chairman are to increase participation in swimming events and broaden leadership of the LMSC.
