Profiling Gloria A Nemet

Gloria Nemet came up through an age group program in Long Island and swam for Farmingdale University and then for Stoneybrook. She's been swimming in South Florida since 1987. In 1993 she finished second in the 1500 free and the 400 IM at LCM Nationals in Minneapolis and finished third in the 400 free. In 1994 she won the national championship in the 100 breast and took second in five other events at long course championships in Buffalo.

Gloria usually focuses on her race, not on her competition. But in the 100 breaststroke in Buffalo, she really wanted to beat the top seed who had already beaten her in very close races in the 50 and the 200 breast. Gloria's pre-race concentration was, this time, centered clearly on how she would win over this rival. And she did, for her first ever national championship. Gloria has been competing since she was eight years old. She says as an age-grouper she was often swimming for her parents and her coach rather than for her own enjoyment. As a Masters swimmer, she for the first time swims solely for her own enjoyment, and in Masters swimming her hard work in training is always satisfying. Ken Nemet, her husband and coach, is part of the reason for this. "He's enthusiastic and works well with all types of swimmers. He's really the person who makes swimming fun for me".
